Introducing ourselves
We are the parish church of St Neots
The church, situated in the centre of the town, is one of the oldest buildings in St Neots and was founded by the Priory to which the town owes its origin. The parish includes most of the town on the east side of the River Ouse, including the Sandfields Estate, Longsands Road, Priory Park, the new estates towards Little Paxton and the new estate about to be constructed east of the railway line. A map is available showing the parish boundary.
If you live in the parish you are entitled to have your children Christened in the church, be married in the church, be buried from the church.
The Churches
We are part of that great number of people in this country who call themselves Christians – over 30 million of us. Like ofther churches in the town, Roman Catholics and members of the Free Churches, Methodists, Baptists, and the United Reformed we worship God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Church of England
The Church of England consists of parishes, each of which belongs to a Diocese. It is part of a wider body of Christians throughout the world called the Anglican Communion. As the national church, we try to be a bridge uniting Christians of different points of view. Wherever we can we work together in obedience to our founder Jesus Christ to give people hope, faith and love.
Being a Christian
Being a Christian means believing in God and following the teaching of Jesus Christ which are found in the Bible.
- we worship every Sunday (though prayers are also said in Church every day)
- we baptise children who are brought to us
- we offer to teach them the faith through Sunday School
- we prepare couples who live in the parish for marriage
- we conduct funerals and try to support the bereaved afterwards
- we teach children and adults about the faith as taught by Jesus
- and we take a part in the life of the town
We believe in a God who loves us such that he took human form in the person of Jesus of Nazareth to save us from meaningless lives and to restore us to the kind of lives we were meant for.
You can find us on a Sunday a 9.30am
Most of us come together to worship on a Sunday morning – though we have evening services as well.
The morning service takes the form of a Eucharist (its other name is Holy Communion). Jesus told his disciples to break bread and share wine whenever they met together. This is what we do.
It is a sung service with hymns, some old, some new, and a sermon. We encourage participation by members of the congregation and there is a robed choir.
We welcome people of all ages
We have a crèche for the very little ones, in a corner of the church out of sight but not out of earshot when needed.
We have a monthly Pram Service for mothers and very small children.
We have a growing Sunday School which meets in church at the beginning of the service and then goes out during the Ministry of the Word (the teaching part of the service)
We try to make our faith relate to daily life
We have House Groups which meet fortnightly so that members of the congregation can share their faith and their experiences and encourage each other. Bible study forms an important part of these meetings.
We teach the faith to all ages
Twice a year we run evening classes on basic Christianity for anyone who is interested.
It’s called +Plus.
We have a Church Primary School, St Mary’s, close by on Wintringham Road which has a nursery. The headteacher Mrs Barnard welcomes enquiries from prospective parents. Ring the school on 01480 398048.
