| Two important English saints are honoured (commemorating also Kentigern and Hilary of Poitiers, whose day is tomorrow). Benedict Biscop (d.689) is the founder of the double monastery of Wearmouth and Jarrow, whilst Aelred (d.1167), of Hexham, is the most important figure, as third Abbot, in the history of Rievaulx Abbey, and an important writer too. Kentigern (d.603) is one of the chief early apostles of Galloway and Cumbria, and Hilary (d.367) is a major figure in the early church in Gaul. |
